Okay so today I got told I was allowed medication for my bipolar. ☺️ I'm so happy because they're happy with my eating progress. ☺️ but... my psychiatrist kind of scared me, he's given me antipsychotics, he said that I can stop taking them at any time I wanted, I didn't need to lower my dose, I could just stop taking them and I didn't even need to tell him. I'm pretty sure antipsychotics work by interfering with your brain chemicals, surely this would be damaging to just quit? It's making me kind of not trust anything he says. Anyways is he right? Can you just stop?

I would honestly do some research and get another doctors opinion

I've booked a doctors appointment & researched it, it says if you withdraw you can experience the same symptoms you were if you were to give up an addiction, and can induce psychosis! 😣

Might be because he's started me off at the lowest dose, maybe when he increases it as he said he will slowely, then I can't

I would trust your doctor over google but maybe ask another just to go over the details and make sure what he said is correct x

If you're taking Aripiprazole or the brand Abilify (you don't need to disclose whether you are or aren't) then you should only come off of it with the supervision of your psychiatrist. It's a really powerful drug, and the longer you're on it the more reliant your brain becomes on it and therefore if you just stop taking it all together your brain won't know what's hit it. It was irresponsible for him to say that and I don't really understand why he'd say that either. (I work in a pharmacy so I learn all about different drugs)

Hmmm I've never heard of someone coming off a medication without doctors advice... I'd get a second opinion

My brother who takes antipsychotics for his schizophrenia has gone totally off one brand and onto another before but not off totally. I know he was told he had to Wean himself off antidepressants if he wanted to go off them but he's not allowed to go off the antipsychotics so idk about that

Okay girls thankyou. Just seems a bit weird. I know with antidepressants and beta blockers you can't as they alter brain chemistry

Anti-psychotics alter brain chemistry also

That's what I thought. He didn't even check blood pressure or anything like that, and it says you can't take them if you have low blood pressure, which I know I have, as I have all my life!

Antipsychotics do 100% affect brain chemistry that's how they work. I would get a second opinion to be safe

My mom is a psychairist and usally with low does you can be fine it depends on dosage and how it affects you when you take it. You will experience Some side effects stopping it right away. Usally with antipychotics you słowy decrease the dose. If you want second opinon you can do that . Hope this helps!

@starshine I'm on 150mg, the lowest is like 25mg? And my dosage is increasing to 300mg soon. I've booked a doctors appointment just to double check! X

@kaaayyyy that seems too high to just stop taking it like that. It will probbly make you feel weird doing that. Good to make sure though with second opinon.
